As a Baltimore professional photographer, capturing the image is only half the story. It’s the editing that can transform a mundane photo into something truly special. Skillful editing helps shape an image’s mood and narrative. Whether it’s a portrait or an event, I refine every image using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.
Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how I approach photo editing from start to finish.
Editing always begins in Adobe Lightroom. I import all of my photos as RAW files—uncompressed images containing thousands of pixels. The more pixels there are, the more “information” is available for editing and enhancement.
I import the RAW files into a folder within a catalog. These folders are organized by date and session type. For example, I recently photographed the St. Ignatius Academy graduation. I saved all the images in a folder named with that event title and date. Having a consistent organizational system is essential for tracking and archiving client work.
I also back up all of my work to an external drive. That way, if a client asks for photos from three or four years ago, I can easily retrieve them.
Once the images are imported, I cull them—flagging the best shots and discarding duplicates or poorly lit, out-of-focus images. I may go through them a second or third time to ensure I’m only editing the strongest ones.
Lightroom is where I make the first round of edits. Here’s my process:
Once I finish the base edits, I sync the settings across similar images for consistency, then export select files into Photoshop for detailed retouching.
When I need to retouch an image such as fixing blemishes or remove stray hairs, Photoshop is indispensable.
Back in Lightroom, I reimport the edited Photoshop files and make any final tweaks. Then I export them in formats tailored to the client’s needs—usually a web-optimized JPEG set and high-resolution print files.
It’s always important to get the image right in-camera. While editing can rescue some imperfect shots, it’s not a remedy for out-of-focus or poorly lit photos.
That said, editing can elevate a good image to something exceptional. Lightroom and Photoshop are tools I use to refine and polish my work, helping me deliver images my clients love.
